The Immanuel Parish Choir
Parish Choir, Advent 2022
|
Immanuel is fortunate to have parishioners who dedicate their time and talent to sing for our weekly service. During the year, the choir sings each Sunday, at Evensongs, and Advent Lessons and Carols. Our repertoire encompasses ancient chant, Renaissance polyphony, oratorio choruses, and contemporary sacred anthems and motets.
Hear anthem recordings here. You are welcome to be a member of our music ministry! Summer Choir is back this July! July Summer Choir provides a wonderful introduction to choral singing and to the Immanuel Parish Choir, many of whose members participate in summer choir. All are welcome to participate in the July Summer Choir without prior choral or singing experience. Music learned in rehearsal is sung in that week’s Sunday worship service. The choir has flexible participation and does not require a month-long commitment: anyone interested may sing one or more weeks throughout the month, simply by arriving in time for the 9:45am rehearsal. Join us for one or all of the Sundays in July at 9:45am where we will learn the hymns for the week and a short anthem. All ages and singing abilities are welcome! |
Choral Services
Advent Lessons and Carols
Following the Anglican tradition of Christmas Lessons and Carols, our Advent Service takes place in early December. We read seven lessons which foretell the coming of the Messiah, and complement these with festive choral music and instrumental offerings, all anticipating and celebrating the advent of Immanuel, God with us. A lively reception follows with food and fellowship.
Choral Evensong
Evensong is a service of choral evening prayer, offered by the choir on occasional Sundays at 4:00 pm.
Hymns, psalms, readings and canticles (Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) follow the lectionary, with choral anthems and organ music complementing scriptural themes.
Those who attend Evensong find it to be a serene service which offers time for contemplation at the end of the day, and in preparation for a new week.
It is an opportunity to invite guests from other parishes or other traditions to share in the community at Immanuel, and fellowship at a reception which follows the service.
Sung Compline
Compline is a brief service of evening prayer, which the choir sings to complement an evening supper and adult education. Originating from the word for “complete” this service is a simple offering of prayer, scripture, and choral singing in a meditative evening setting.
